The lower school curriculum covers years 7 to 9. Upon entry, students are placed in mixed ability forms of approximately thirty children and are taught in these groups for some subjects.

Notes on Individual Subjects

English, Mathematics and Science

Grouping in these subjects is by ability (setting) and is introduced in Year 7 and continued for all five years of secondary education.


Geography and History

These subjects are based upon mixed ability teaching groups.


Modern Languages

All students in Year 7 will study either French & German & Spanish in mixed ability groups.


Design and Technology

Design and Technology is a National Curriculum course incorporating elements of Graphical Products, Product Design, Systems Control and Food and Textiles Technology. The course is supported by a range of elements of Information and Communication Technology. Mixed ability teaching groups are employed.


Information and Communication Technology

A course in Information and Communication Technology is taught in years 7, 8 and 9 and is increasingly becoming an important teaching tool.


Physical Education

In Years 7 and 8 some teaching involves mixed ability groups for both boys and girls.


Personal, Social and Health Education

A Personal, Social and Health Education course is taught to all students. This involves Citizenship.


Religious Education

This subject is taught in the Lower School for form groups.


Arrangements for Making Choices

During the Spring Term of Year 9 parents and students are given full written details of Year 10 and 11 courses and details of what choices are required to be made. This information is supplemented by an evening meeting for parents where all aspects of Years 10 and 11 course details are outlined and parents have the opportunity to consult with subject teachers.
